There is a solid community of Beard Gang guys these days on Instagram. You might find it a bit strange that a forest of hair packed on a person’s chin can make them look attractive but not if you know the science behind it.
Beards actually serve more function to facial skin than just establish a figure of masculinity.
Here is a fun fact: beards make you look younger!
Of course, this is not a fact that Nigerian mothers would want to hear; especially not with their never-ending bickering for you to shave and ‘look responsible’. So before you share this amazing fact with the other men in your Family Whatsapp group, you might have to temporarily remove your mom.
A beard is to the skin of a man what a full skincare routine is to a woman. Talk about a more pocket-friendly system (hello dermatologist!).
According to a 2013 report by the UK’s Daily Mail, beards help to trap water in the skin — hence, leaving the face moisturized. The hair follicles in the chin region work with the oil glands to make the skin thicker and a thicker skin means your skin is less susceptible to damage as it ages.
The beard has some other interesting tricks up its sleeves.
Not only do the beards protect your face from dust, they also shield you, according to a research, against direct exposure to UV rays from the sun. Exposure to the sun for prolonged periods is one tried and tested method for looking older than you are. If getting wrinkles at 40 is your own idea of fashion, then feel free to go about in the sun without a sunblock!
It comes as a bit of surprise that even though beards have these shielding effects, male members of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D were beardless — sorry, I digress.
Anyways, beards must not be left unkempt. Because your beards take care of your skin for you, they don’t have time to take care of themselves, so that responsibility falls on you. Apply beard oil and comb your beard to give it a sheen. Maybe then you’d be able to convince your mom that having beards is actually a good thing!
